IPv4 / IPv6 conversion

Canonicalise address formats and generate or identify standard IPv4-mapped IPv6 and 6to4 representations.

All calculations run in this browser. Input is not uploaded.

Convert notation, not connectivity

Normalize IPv4 or IPv6 notation and inspect expanded, numeric and reverse-DNS forms. Supported embedded IPv4 formats are identified locally in your browser.

Common questions

Can any IPv6 address be converted to IPv4?

No. An ordinary IPv6 address has no unique IPv4 equivalent. This tool does not invent a mapping.

Does conversion give me IPv6 connectivity?

No. Notation conversion provides no routing, tunneling or NAT64 service. Connectivity still depends on the network and service configuration.

How many times can :: appear in IPv6?

At most once per address, so the omitted number of groups remains unambiguous. Leading zeros in individual groups can also be omitted.

Do letter case or omitted zeros change the IP?

No. Hexadecimal case, expanded notation and valid compressed forms can represent the same address. Normalize addresses before comparing them.

Is IPv4-mapped notation a public IPv6 address?

It is not a newly assigned public IPv6 address. The ::ffff:0:0/96 format represents IPv4 in certain software interfaces and does not imply IPv6 connectivity.

Does generating reverse-DNS notation query DNS?

No. It generates an in-addr.arpa or ip6.arpa query name from the address. Use the DNS tool to retrieve actual PTR records.
